Castres is located at an altitude of 172 meters (564 ft) above sea level. It is located 45 km (28 mi) south-southeast of Albi, the préfecture (capital) of Tarn, and 79 km (49 mi) east of Toulouse, the capital of Midi-Pyrénées. Castres is intersected from north to south by the Agout and Durenque rivers.
The Thoré forms most of the commune's south-eastern border, then flows into the Agout, which forms part of its western border.
